I've been out of the loop as of late because of school but I've been wanting to talk about this since I found out about it and since I found out it wasn't a fan project;
So the ponies ARE going to be human(like) thanks to Equestria Girls, a spin-off of sorts of FiM. [link]
There is also a promotional video up as well! ITS DA BOMB! [link]
Okay, no. That one was a joke but apparently the first link is not.
If this is actually going to make it all the way to its scheduled release date, I have to say is wow, okay. You threw me for a loop Hasbro because WHAT? I now MLP has had spin-offs before in toys but people, we are looking at a spin-off that includes freaking humans.
First and foremost, I know a lot of people are going to have concerns about the designs as I have seen the long list of them already on other sites but considering I want to get all this off my chest and I want to get the ball rolling on the discussion, here's what I think THUS far, with the least amount of negativity I can put forth;
1. I am actually GLAD that they are going the rainbow skin route. I can think of a lot of reasons WHY they might have done it aside from trying to stick with the color themes of the characters in the show (notice how Rarity is BONE-SNOW-OH-GOD-SHE-LOOKS-DEAD white and Dashie is jetline blue) but with this, this allows so much room in terms of 'they can be whatever you want them to be'. But I have to ask; are the Pony girls going to be the only ones sporting these shades or is EVERYONE going to be rainbow colored? I can only imagine the things that will be poked at if its the former.
2. The designs are.....okay? Cute? Not that bad? If I'm going to say anything its that the girls all look too SIMILAR in terms of pose, structure, and over all design. Its another one of those 'base' concept designs and as my buddies will tell you, I have a great dislike for that only because it makes things look too similar and BORING. Granted though.....even in pony form, everyone was a recolor of someone else.
I do wish they would have been more creative and, dare I say it, *ahem* DIVERSE with their designs. I mean, seriously. People act like they can't draw different poses (in any gender I should add. I don't want to get into 'default boy base') or different body structures or that if they even think about it, it will kill them or something. Seriously though, I'm not harping on the designs and I don't think they SUCK but the still image makes them all look like they took one base for everyone and just copied and pasted from a select box. In 2013, you'd think and WISH that stuff like this would be seen as passe or something because, as I stated, it can lead to rather bland designs and such but I digress. I'm sure you'll have better critiques than I will.
3. How is the format of this show going to work? So its a spin-off that has no bearings on the show but will there be other FiM characters in this as well? Will some of the elements and charm from MLP still be placed in this human setting? Will there be magic and will there be powers? (With rainbow skin, there HAS to be something magical here. Then again, if not this wouldn't be the only series that had characters with multicolored skin who's world was just the same as our own.) Is this just going to be another school set show or will there be something more to it to add bite? I don't know, I'll just have to wait and watch.
All in all, I wouldn't say I'm 100% excited about this but I'm not rage festing over it either. I just want to see how it plays out before I really start to review it and such.As long as they don't try to turn this into Bratz....everything will be fine.
