This is a continuation of the last journal so if you want to see what sparked this topic, check out that journal and the link provide.
I think by now everyone and their grandmother is familiar with the Brony term 'Love and Tolerance' and in the same vein, people are also familiar with how some Bronies don't always live up to the meaning of that term which to an outsider looks like your basic 'Respect everyone, no matter their differences' type of heading. The problem with this is that a lot of people have been shown again and again that this mantra doesn't hold as much weight as some would want us to think. Love and Tolerance seems to go only so far with a lot of Bronies and after encounter so many who have gone against it, Love and Tolerance basically means 'Accept my assholish behavior while I continue to disrespect you for no reason'.
In the link in the last journal, we saw once more how Love and Tolerance seems to fly over the head of so-called dedicated fans. When the simple notion of skin color of a character is brought up, they can not help but put themselves in a scramble of big words to make themselves sound smart all the while showing forth their passive racism and then expecting us to feel sorry for them or kiss their asses for making such 'real world' observations such as how skin color IS linked to personality and other things. In a world where we're supposedly more connected than ever,I find it sad that people still aren't connected enough to sever racial stereotypes that are not only alive and well in this day but continue to thrive thanks to mindsets presented in the link and other instances were racism with characters have shown their ugly heads.
But racism isn't the only thing that we've seen Bronies show their true colors towards. Aside from racism, there is also homophobia and body shaming as well. You have to wonder, how the fuck can this even happen when the characters aren't even human? How does anyone know, us included, what a character would look like if they were human. The truth is, none of us do but that doesn't stop us from drawing characters in different ways. There is fun in this and it also strengths the friendship element in the show. Why people don't understand this is a mystery to me but as I said, homophobia and body presentation are another thing that is a problem with human drawings and the brony community.
As far as I have seen things, this is how the levels of 'love and tolerance' goes. On the top of the list, we have homophobia. I'm going to say this from my own perspective; I have seen Bronies act a lot more welcoming towards same-gender pairings than anything that has to do with race and body type but I have also seen the homophobia section of it as well (from a group that shall not be named) Nonetheless, I will argue that this 'acceptance' of pairings isn't as good as it seems. Why? Because its just like lesbian porn; they're not accepting the pairings because it showcases characters who are truly in love but rather because its HOT and that's all that matters. Its a case of 'Die for my Ship' except with less dying of course; people only want to see the pairing for their own pleasure because in the end, the pairing is nothing but a performance piece to them. They're show monkeys for someone else and they are not their own characters. More or less, its just a female version of people who like yaio only because they think its 'cute' yet at the same time, they condemn real life same-sex pairings unless they act to their liking. So pairings are okay....but only if certain sects of the audience thinks its hot. If its not hot then, 'Ew, get that nasty lesbian shit away!'
Granted, and thankfully, not everyone thinks this way but its something to look out for and I find incredibly infuriating. Its really
Second, there are body issues. I'm going to save my own 'the reason we suck at drawing bodies is because we keep limiting ourselves to one type' rant for another time but on the issue of body types, the level of acceptance is less than that of the above. Human beings are not subjected to one body type; people are short, tall, skinny, heavy, and so on and so forth. With this notion, it would make you wonder why some people criticize artist who show humanized versions of the ponies as anything but anime anatomy (not knocking on anime, but rather the 'default' body type that is used over and over again) Again, it has to deal with what people consider hot and what they consider ugly. As long as the body type is pleasing to the eye, they will tolerate it. If its NOT, then its rejected because it does not fit their ideal of what they consider hot. Of course, we have the crowd that considers a 'full figured woman' nothing but the same anime anatomy but with her ass and breast exaggerated to the point where they no longer look human but once again like the dream fuck toy some audience members want to do. When we have pictures of the main six as women with varying figures and someone says they're ugly just because they don't look fuckable, that's not love or tolerance.
Third and finally, we have the racism spectrum. I put this on the bottom of the list because it seems people always seem to weasel their way out of the pairing and body trap by saying they enjoy pairings (only if they're hot) and different bodies (as long as their tits are huge) but this is something no one can weasel their way out of without sounding like a complete jackass. I'm not talking about a person going 'Well, I'd see Twi as X rather than X but this is still cool anyway' but rather 'Twilight would never be X because she is too smart and we all know that Xs are stupid and loud.' The racism that runs rampent around the older fans is embarrassing, infuriating and sickening. To know that there are adults that are older than ME who are trying their damnedest to insert their hateful views into a KID'S SHOW is just sad and what makes it even worse is to think that if a person could really think its okay to call Twilight a NIGGER on someone's picture, what's stopping them from saying the same to a little girl who drew Twilight black because she wanted to? Even though all three of the issues I brought up here are equally bad, the reason why the race thing hits me the most is because of how people tend to ignore the fact that with each hateful thing they say, they are proving once more that racism is still alive and still a huge issue yet people ignore it now since everything is 'fine and dandy' apparently.
It still seems to be a big hurdle for some people; some people can accept a pairing, they can accept different bodies, but different races? No, no, no, no. That's too much for them to take! Why must we force them to accept that all three can happen at once since that is apparently what we're doing? Why do we have to be so MEAN to Bronies by calling out their racism or homophobia? Why do we have to BULLY them into seeing that diversity means more than just accepting a person's personality just because you think its cute? Why? WHY!?
I'll tell you why. Because I for one am sick of asshole Bronies who are trying to ruin a cute show for kids by inserting their own close-minded views into it and acting as if their views are the correct ones and as if their viewership is the most important. The last thing little kids need to be taught, especially little girls, is that their favorite show houses a collection of some of the most immature, selfish, and all and all close-minded people on earth who will never accept them because of how they look or who the love or how they sound or whatever. The people who think like that can brush it off as 'Why does it matter? Its just ponies?' but from the way they react to a female human, it only goes to show that if they flip the fuck like that over a drawing, imagine how they act in the REAL world where they WILL have to come into contact with other human beings. Once you put that through your mind, you really begin to see how destructive and hurtful these people can be.
Having said all of this, I will return to the title of this journal; Love and Tolerance and Exceptions. There is LOVE and TOLERANCE in the Brony fandom but it seems to come with exceptions, those exceptions being;
*You can draw the characters as human WITH THE EXCEPTION of anything other than 'default' because that would 'confuse' people.
*You can depict the characters in a same sex pairing WITH THE EXCEPTION that they appear pleasing to the eye.
*You can draw the characters in different body types WITH THE EXCEPTION that they focus more on heightened female features (read: ass and tits)
In other words, its starting to feel that the racist, the homophobes and the bigots want US, the ones who want to branch out, to cater to them once again to make the series more enjoyable for their needs, needs that as I have told you would leave to nothing but more hate or the same old shit we see in other shitty shows repeated over and over again, only because a bunch of assholes can't stand the fact that there is a show where people can be a lot more open to how they can present the characters that doesn't include tasteless porn and other crap.
If you're going to LOVE and TOLERATE someone, you wouldn't tell them they couldn't be this because of their skin color, orientation, or whatever. That is NOT tolerating; that is placing people in bullshit molds because you're too ignorant to see and realize that people are not limited by whatever stereotypes they are saddled with.
To close things, I will say this; it is not those who are OUTSIDE the MLP fandom who need to learn love and tolerance. If anything, there are more people WITHIN the fanbase who need to learn these things.
Thoughts, comments, and any mentions about gaps you noticed in this (considering I only got three hours of sleep) are welcomed.
